Essure - Birth Control

Essure Birth Control

Essure is a surgery-free form of permanent birth control that is performed in office for the convenience of our patients. The procedure typically takes less than 30 minutes with no downtime to recover and you can return to normal activities in 1-2 days.

The Essure inserts are soft, flexible and hormone-free. With a mild sedative taken in the office, Dr. Kowalczyk will insert a hysteroscope through the cervix to visualize the uterine opening of each fallopian tube, inserting a device in each side. No abdominal scars are created with this procedure.

The 3 months following the procedure, scarring occurs in each tube creating a barrier preventing sperm from meeting the eggs. During this period, an alternate method of birth control must be used as backup.

After 3 months, a hysterosalpingogram is performed to verify that the tubes are completely blocked with scar tissue. At this point, you are protected from pregnancy.

Although no form of contraception is 100% effective, the Essure device studies suggest 99.83% efficacy for this form of sterilization.
